Gen.11v1-6: Now the whole earth had one language and one speech. And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they dwelt there. Then they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and bake them thoroughly”. They had brick for stone, and they had asphalt for mortar. And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth”. But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower which the son’s men had built. And the Lord said, “indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them.

There is no doubt about the power of Teamwork as you can see from our text scripture in (Genesis 11 verse 1-6) but how do you achieve teamwork? How can a group of people successfully work together in order to achieve their common goals and objectives? This is what we will be talking about in this series of lessons. As Henry Ford once said, “Coming Together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working Together is Success”. So how can this be a living reality in what you do?

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO WORK TOGETHER?

  1. Unity. It takes unity to be able to work together as a team. This was the people at the towel of babel had! They were of one mind and purpose. In fact, they were united in their purpose and resolve, which was why they could work together (Gen.11v1, 6). In the same vein, when we are united, there is no limit to what we can do and where we can get to. This is why Unity is so powerful and important. It’s time to be united in the spirit, in our minds and purposes. Do you know it’s possible to be different and still be able to work together? So our Differences should not be a barrier to walking together. It’s just like our human bodies, it’s made up of different parts but they work perfectly together. So, it’s time to do away with any form of excuses in justifying your differences (2Chro.5v11-13).

So how do we achieve Unity? We can achieve Unity by:

Working towards the Same Goal. In order words, working towards a common goal helps a team in working together. So you might have to lay aside personal goals in place of the team’s goals.

Focusing on our strengths instead of our weaknesses. This is a vital part of achieving unity in any team. This will also help you in working together as a team.

Deemphasizing I and myself instead of emphasizing Us and We. The emphasis should be on togetherness and not on trying to outshine one another (Acts 4v32). This is how to achieve Unity is your team.

Pursuing the same vision or dream. The word Division is from 2 words, i.e. Di and Vision. Which actually means 2 Visions. This normally happens when the people in a team are chasing two different visions instead of the same vision. Always remember that Unity is strength while Division is Weakness (Ps.133v1).

Praying for Unity. It’s important not to forget to pray for unity in our teams because this is one avenue of achieving unity. Jesus our Lord and Saviour practised the same and even showed us by his example that praying for unity is key and crucial to the success of any teamwork. (Jn.17v13-24).

Playing your roles very well. There are roles for every member of any team and when you play your part well, it helps build unity within our work—this is why you need to understand your roles and play them accordingly.

My dear brothers and sisters, I believe you have seen the unique place and importance of unity in working together as a team. This is something you need to work assiduously towards all the time. It’s a must-have quality in our teams. Without these, all important attributes it will be difficult for you to get the best of results from your team. So start saying Yes to Unity and saying No to every form of disunity.
