Joshua 1 verse 8: ‘This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.’
The study of the Bible or the word of God is something that should be part and parcel of our lives as Believers. But from general observation this is not true in the life of every child of God. So why do people struggle with Bible study? One of the major reasons for this is because people have not been taught how to study the Bible. This is why this series of teaching is coming our way. I believe that as we go through this study, God will be reviving and empowering our capacities to grow in his word. 1Pet2v2.
In this series we will be focused on the following:
- What it means to study the Bible.
- Basic truths about Bible Study.
- Why you need to Study the Bible.
- The various methods or approach of studying the Bible.
- Practical Guidelines on how to study the Bible.
So what does it really mean to study the Bible? What does studying the Bible really entails? This is what we intend to discover and unravel, so here we go.
Studying the Bible or the Word of God implies the following:
I. A detailed critical inspection of the word of God and not a careless hasty search or glossing over the Word.Jos1v8. To consider the word in detail and subject to an analysis in order to discover its’ essential features and meaning i.e. securitize, research, probe, investigate, or look into etc. This is what studying the Bible is all about. So are you ready for this wonderful adventure?
II. Applying your mind to learning and understanding the scriptures or word. Pro2v1-2. So if you are not willing to apply your mind, then it means you are not really interested in studying the Bible.
III. To give attentive consideration and meditation to the word of God. Pro3v21. Attention and meditation are two vital components of studying your Bible.
Iv. A written documentation and notes of your findings of the scriptures or word of God. I.e. your observation, inference, summary and conclusion. This is another important part of Bible study that you need to pay attention to.
V. To be a student of the word of God. 2Tim2v15. Yes my dear friends this is obviously one of the goals of Bible study i.e. to make you a student of the word.
Vi. To analyze, consider, examine or learn the scriptures. Studying is more than reading. It is an in depth analysis of a thing.
So from the above definitions, would you honestly say that you are involved in studying your Bible?
