Proverbs 27verse17 ‘Iron sharpeneth iron; So a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.’
One of the requirements of a successful marriage is for your spouse to be your friend. And one of the benefits of friendship in marriage is bonding. Bonding is not feasible without friendship. Friendship is what solidifies bonding, as you can see from our text scripture (Proverbs 27v17). So is your spouse your best friend? Is your spouse your friend or foe? Is your husband your friend or boss? Is your wife your friend or your maid? The answers you give to these questions will tell whether you are friends with your spouse or not.
So, my dear reader, it’s time to raise the bar regarding your relationship with your spouse. It’s possible to be close to your spouse, but one major principle that can help in this regard is to know what a true friend is. To befriend your spouse, you must be a true friend! So how can you know a true friend?
Traits of a True Friend:
A true friend will not abandon you when the going gets tough. Pro17v17
A True friend will speak the truth to you. Eph4v15
A true friend will be available for counsel. Pro27v9
A true friend gives you unconditional love. Jn15v13
A true friend will make you better. Pro27v17
A True friend will be sensitive to your feelings.
A true friend forgives freely and easily. Col3v13-14
So my dear readers, how would you rate yourself regarding these criteria? One of the best ways to be a true friend is by becoming a true friend. So are you ready to take up this challenge? You will notice a transformation in your marital life as you do so.
