Genesis 11verse1-6: ‘Now the whole earth had one language and one speech. And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they dwelt there. Then they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and bake them thoroughly”. They had brick for stone, and they had asphalt for mortar. And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth”. But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower which the son’s men had built. And the Lord said, “indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them.’

You are welcome back to our discussion on the subject of how to work effectively with others. This is a very important skill and ability that you need to succeed in any form of human relationship. This is why you need to master the art of working together with others. I trust that you will be greatly blessed by the truths I will be sharing with you today. So without much ado, let’s examine another important principle in working successfully with others.

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO WORK TOGETHER?

  1. Understanding. This is a crucial factor to consider if you will be successful in working together with others. It doesn’t matter how talented or gifted a team is; if they don’t understand each other, they can’t work together. Understanding is a process, and it’s not something that can be achieved overnight. It takes time but it’s worth creating time for it because it will pay off at the end of the day (Amos 3v3). You cannot understand people from a distance, you need to draw closer. So what are the areas you and your team members need to have an understanding to work together as a Team?

AREAS OF UNDERSTANDING TO WORK ON:

1. You need to understand your Leaders. You need to understand the vision, dreams, personalities, temperaments, etc., of your leaders if you will be successful in working together. So to what extent do you understand your leaders? (Isa.9v16).

You need to understand one another. You ought to understand your fellow team members if you will successfully work with them. Do you know their aspirations, hopes, feelings, expectations, etc? These are part of the psychology of human beings that you need to master.

You need to understand their language/speech. As a team, we ought to speak:

– The same language (Gen.11v6).

– Speak with one Voice (1Cor.1v10).

– Speak the same vision (Pro.29v18).

These are just some of the things that would help you understand your team members’ language! So you need to pay attention to this; otherwise, your chances of working together are very slim.

You need to understand your roles and responsibilities. There are roles and responsibilities in any team and your failure to understand this will make it very difficult for you to work together with your fellow team members. So to what extent do you know your roles in that team? And how many of your roles are you playing? (1Cor.7v20)

You need to understand your goals and objectives. Every team is supposed to have written out Goals and aspirations. So are you aware of the goals and targets of the team you belong to? Knowing this is crucial to your ability to work together because if you don’t know where the team is going, how would you contribute or even work together successfully? So make sure you understand the goals and aspirations of your team (Eccle.6v9).

You need to understand the Vision and Mandate of your team. Understanding the true calling of your team will help you to work better with your fellow team members. So you know where you are going or what the team wants to do? My dear reader, take the time to understand your team’s vision very well, as this will help you in relating better with your team members (Hab.2v2).

You need to understand your differences and uniqueness. Your Differences make you unique and there is strength in diversity. One of the reasons why you are the same as your fellow team members is because of what you have been called to do. So you must see your differences as a form of strength and not a form of weakness (Rom.12v6). I want you to always remember that you were made different to make a difference.

So it’s time to understand one another because the more you can do this, the better your chances of working together better as a team.

Thank you, blessed Holy Spirit!
