Luke 12v16-21: “Then he spoke a parable to them, saying: The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully and he thought within himself, saying, ‘what shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?’ So he said, ‘I will do this; I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry.’ But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?’ So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”
You are welcome back to our discussion on putting God first and as you can see from the story in Lk 12v16-21, it is important for us to put God first in whatever we do so as not to make the same mistake the rich fool made in our text scripture. So, what does it really mean to put God first?
I want to look at what putting God first means from at least 4 dimensions.
- To give God the honour or right to tell you what to do, where to go and who to be. This is what putting God first means. It’s a sign of the honour and respect that you have for God. Do you give God the honour to tell you what to do or do you do things your own way? (Psalm 25v12).
- To exalt or acknowledge God’s will as higher or above your own will or other people’s will. In other words, you put God’s will ahead of your own will or the will of others. Does God’s will come first or last in your life? (John 4v34).
- For God to come first before any other thing or person i.e. for God to come first in all your ways or works. It simply means to make God your number one or topmost priority. Precious child of God, where is God in your life? Is He on the essential service or emergency service list? What position does the Almighty occupy in your life? (Proverbs 3v6).
- To be Kingdom-of-God-minded i.e. to care about the things that God cares about or to be interested in what God is interested in. This is another meaning of putting God first. So, is God’s agenda your agenda? (Matthew 6v33).
My dear reader, I do hope you now see and understand what putting God first means. This is so vitally important if you really want to walk in the power and blessings of putting God first. May the revelation of these truths transform your life forever.

Prayer for Today: Lord, I make the decision to put you first in my life. Holy Spirit, please help me to stay faithful to this promise in Jesus name, amen.
CONFESSION: Lord, I acknowledge you as the most important priority in my life. Therefore, I exalt your will far above my will and I give you the right to tell me what to do, where to go, and who to be. I love what you love and I hate what you hate. Your agenda is my agenda. I choose to be Kingdom-of-God-minded rather than being self-centered. Lord, you are my world and everything. I trust in your wisdom and will for my life because I know I will never be last because I put you first in my life and all my endeavors. Glory be to Jesus!
